Companies feeling effects of the softening Alaska cargo market

TACOMA, Wash. - Trade with Alaska has always been steady and predictable business for Puget Sound ports and companies specializing in sending cargo to the 49th state. While international imports and exports have been more prone to dramatic ups and downs, the Alaska trade has chugged along, typically growing by a few percentage points each year.
But in this recession, even the reliable is vulnerable.

A California dealer traveled through Alaska, trying to show that a New Zealand-built aircraft can rival the traditional Cessna turbine aircraft for travel in Bush Alaska.

Ray Ferrell, a demonstration pilot with Utility Aircraft USA, which is the distributor for Pacific Aerospace Ltd. of New Zealand, said the P750 XSTOL would work well on rural Alaska's short runways, and it has the capacity of carry heavy loads.

A recent report on the exports of Alaskan products to the rest of the world has revealed that more and more number of people around the world prefers Alaskan seafood for its superior quality and natural fresh taste.

According to the report on the Q1 exports for the year 2004, the sales of Alaskan products has grown 23 per cent or $147 million compared to the same period last year.

“This is phenomenal growth and well above the excellent year-end results of 2003, when exports climbed 9 per cent over 2002 figures to finish the year at $2.7billion,” said Governor Frank H. Murkowski commenting on the results.

Shuttle buses to be reduced, managers considering increased parking fees

ANCHORAGE - The global recession has hurt one of the mainstays of the Anchorage economy - the air cargo business at the Anchorage airport.
There's a hiring freeze for airport workers. And a $20 million building project between the north and south terminals has been delayed. The airport staff plan to leave windows unwashed this summer and don't plan to mow the grass as often, either.
